2005 a Russian oligarch Mihail Lesin bought the village. The ownership is chained to many companies. During the first couple of years, Lesin had renovated the property under the instructions of Finnis National Museum for almost ten million euros. With the interior designer’s style, the goal was to look like a luxurious cruiser.

Mihail Lesin was murdered on Washington 2015. According to the FBI report, Lesin had received a fatal hit to his head, and signs of abuse were found on his body. The American media claimed that he was preparing a new life in the United States and possible cooperation with local authorities. It was a bad sign for the Russians that Lesin traveled to the American political center, Washington. Now the affairs of Kanervala are handled by the "Moscow group".
