Sustainability in rental cottages, Sauna benches are made by local

Sustainable choices

We make purchases carefully, prioritizing durability and long-term use. Whenever possible, we choose sustainable materials, local services, and eco-labeled products.

Our cottages are built and renovated using traditional methods and wood from our own forest, a naturally low-carbon way to operate. We aim to reduce single-use items, select high-quality products, and recycle everything that’s reasonably possible. Preventing waste is important to us: we guide our guests in recycling and encourage using tap water instead of bottled water.

We also rent boats for our guests – this way, each item serves multiple customers and is used more efficiently.

For the Climate

Our climate action is based on practical choices. We operate in a sensitive archipelago environment, where every decision directly affects the nature we live in, and where our guests come to relax.

We use 100% green electricity. Efficient air-source heat pumps provide heating, and it can be adjusted remotely. During winter, some cottages are left unheated to reduce energy consumption.

We prevent waste through thoughtful choices: by using high-quality, long-lasting items, incorporating recycled materials, and donating what’s no longer needed. Guests are guided in recycling with clear multilingual instructions.

Sustainability in rental cottages is important because the Baltic Sea Archipelago is a sensitive environment

Waste and recycling

At Ylöstalo, waste is managed in accordance with the Särkisalo and Salo regional system. Each cottage provides instructions for sorting common waste types: mixed waste, carton and glass packaging, haushold metal and paper.
Clear sorting guidelines are found in the cottage info folder and on the wall in both Finnish and English.

Where do guests take their waste?
Guests are asked to take sorted recyclable waste (glass, small metal, carton and paper) to the nearby Rinki eco-point at the end of their stay. Mixed waste (and plastic for now) should be taken to the waste bin at the intersection of Länsitalontie and Norrbyntie.
